Aims

The QTP offers extreme environments for the survival of its indigenous animals. After the long period of nature selection, animals such as the yak and Tibetan antelope has evolved unique gene pools. Except for the genes distributed in host genome, which has been studied extensively, genes encoded by the symbiotic microorganisms are as well the major components of such gene pool. Research has shown genes encoded by gut microbiome is at least 150 times larger than that encoded by the host. However, such "extended genome" is relatively unexplored. In response to further exploration, we carry out the research project named "The Tibetan Plateau Animal Microbiome". To date, the project has generated huge amounts of gut metagenomic data, which is estimated exceeding 30TB.
