Project name: Bemisia tabaci
Description: Whitefly-vectored begomoviruses are devastating agricultural pathogens that cause serious economic crop losses all over the world. The transmission efficiencies of begomoviruses vary depending on the biotype of Bemisia tabaci. Previously, we found that Cotton leaf curl Multan Begomovirus is efficiently vectored by Asia II 7 cryptic species while MEAM1 whiteflies were incompetent to transmit the virus. To further understand the molecular mechanisms governing this differential virus transmission, we performed a comparative transcriptomic analysis of both whitefly cryptic species at the early stages of CLCuMuV infection and identified novel whitefly genes that might play crucial roles in shaping the efficiency of virus transmission.
