Project name: Verrucomicrobia bacterium SCGC AAA300-O17
Description: The proposed work is directly relevant to the following DOE missions: 1) Global carbon cycling and sequestration; 2) Biogeochemistry. It also has potential relevance to Alternative Energy Production, through the discovery of genes and metabolic pathways involved in carbon and nitrogen fixation, light harvesting, biopolymer degradation, ethanol and lipid production, etc.. Recent, relevant examples from our lab that were enabled by single cell sequencing include the discoveries of RuBisCO in mesopelagic bacterioplankton previously unknown to contain this gene and the high-throughput identification of the hosts of proteorhodopsin and bacteriochlorophyll genes in freshwater lakes.
