Project name: Meloidogyne exigua isolate:Mex1
Description: Meloidogyne exigua Goeldi is a successful pathogen on coffee despite its meiotic parthenogenesis reproduction mode. This pathogen is the most widely distributed nematode in the coffee production areas in Central and South America, with estimated yield losses reaching until 45% in the Rio de Janeiro State and between 15-20% in Central America. Despite these serious impacts on coffee production, diversity and adaptation of M. exigua has been poorly documented, and so far, only studied based on isozyme profiles and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. We aim to construct a high-quality genome assembly of the genome of M. exigua population 'Mex1' for future studies of phylogenomics on Meloidogyne species. In particular, this will foster comparative genomics to investigate and understand the evolutionary history of this nematode that may help to develop new strategies for its management.
