Project name: Bordetella hinzii
Description: Although Bordetella hinzii is most commonly identified in respiratory tracts of birds, this organism has recently been isolated during the course of human infections. Here, we present the first case of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, complicated by bacteremia, due to B. hinzii. Whole genome sequencing of isolates recovered from both blood and peritoneal fluid confirmed a clonal population of B. hinzii. These studies provide compelling evidence for serious human infection caused by an organism previously thought to be a pathobiont of animals.
