Description: Squirrel monkeys of the genus Saimiri live in the tropical forests of Central and South America and have been recently divided into several species and subspecies. The Bolivian squirrel monkey (Saimiri boliviensis boliviensis) is found in Brazil, Peru, and Bolivia and, like other squirrel monkeys, has an omnivorous diet of fruit, seeds, vegetation, insects, and small vertebrates. Squirrel monkeys are commonly used as pets and for behavioral and biomedical research. The Bolivian squirrel monkey has 21 autosomes and sex chromosomes X and Y.
