Project name: Enterococcus faecium strain:E53

Description: This project aims to delineate the phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of Enterococcus and Klebsiella spp. isolated from South African hospital and municipal effluents and wastewaters. A comparative collection of clinical isolates from the proximate hospitals were also obtained. Key goals include characterizing the genetic diversity, clonal relatedness and resistance mechanisms of such isolates; in order to establish risks associated with the discharge of contaminated hospital effluents along the wastewater continuum, given potentially compromised infrastructure.
