Project name: Enterococcus faecium strain:SP15
Description: Enterococci are Gram-positive lactic acid bacteria with a wide environmental distribution, that encompass many species occupying a wide variety of ecological niches. Enterococcus faecium is a major nosocomial pathogen often causing neonatal meningitis or endocarditis. However, certain strains of E. faecium have beneficial effects on human health due to their probiotic activity. E. faecium SP15 is a newly identified strain, isolated from spring water in Rawalakot, Azad Kashmir, Pakistan, a site of relative isolation with little or no wastewater contamination. Thus, the strain SP15 was selected for genome sequencing to identify the biosynthetic gene clusters related to bacteriocin (enterocin) production and explore the potential probiotic properties of strain.
