Project name: Rhodococcus qingshengii strain:RL1 | isolate:RL1
Description: With an aim to isolate endophytes from leafy greens which are consumed raw, we examined the plant Rucola (Eruca sativa), belonging to the family Brassicaceae. The members of this family produce glucosinolates, nitrogen- and sulfur-containing secondary metabolites. We sequenced the complete genome using Single-molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing (Pacific Biosystems). Genes previously identified for the biotransformation of glucosinolates (methionine sulphoxide reductase, msrA, msrB) were identified from the draft genome. The in silico analyses further revealed presence of several antibiotics and secondary metabolite genes as well as traits commonly associated with plant-bacteria interactions and potential biocontrol ability. Ongoing annotation of complete genome and high throughput mass spectrometric analyses to follow the metabolism of glucosinolates would reveal more information about the genotypic and phenotypic properties of the isolate.
