Project name: Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis strain:W8
Description: Lactococcus lactis W8, a Gram-positive lactic acid bacterium capable of growth in milk. Because of its potential to actively grow in milk and produce nisin concomitantly, the genome of the strain W8 was sequenced. The genome sequence will be useful to explore its potential functions in converting milk to Dahi (a semi solid fermented milk product). As starter culture the strain W8 will find application in the production of novel fermented milk products of safe quality. Although, it is known that certain strains of L. lactis produce nisin, but their application in milk fermentation is limited due to poor growth in milk. Hence, it is relevant to decode the genetic information contained in the genome of W8 to enable us to discover the technological traits behind milk fermentation
