Project name: Azospirillum sp.
Description: Azospirillum sp. strain TSH58 is a denitrifier isolated from rice paddy soils in Tokyo, Japan. Azospirillum sp. strain Sp245 is also a denitrifier isolated isolated in Brazil in 1986 from surface-sterilized wheat roots. These strains carry the nirK nitrite reductase gene, a key denitrification functional gene, which seems to be horizontal transferred. Comparative genome analysis among the Azospirillum strains including this strain will provide us insights into the evolution of this agriculturally-important microorganisms.
