Project name: Ectopistes migratorius
Description: The UCSC Paleogenomics Laboratory and academic collaborators in partnership with Revive & Restore have sequenced DNA from multiple passenger pigeon tissue and subfossil samples for population and comparative genomics research. Before the species' extinction in 1914, passenger pigeons were the most numerous bird in North America, and possibly the world: numbering 3-5 billion individuals in the early 1800's. Genomes of passenger pigeons offer a rare opportunity to research the effects of large population size on the evolution of eukaryotic genomes.
