Project name: Stenotrophomonas sp. IITR87
Description: A polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) degrading bacteria, Stenotrophomonas sp. strain IITR87 (GenBank Accession KJ933407) was isolated from oil contaminated site located at Mathura, India. The bacteria were isolated by enrichment culture technique and can utilize high molecular weight PAHs like pyrene, phenanthrene and benzo(a)pyrene as sole carbon source. Functional genes encoding dioxygenase and dehydrogenase responsible for degradation of pyrene were also identified in the strain. The strain was undertaken for whole-genome sequencing to understand the genetic basis for degradation of high molecular weight PAHs and decipher the genetic attributes for survival and growth at contaminated sites.
