Project name: Kurthia sp. 3B1D
Description: This project was initiated to provide community college student an opportunity to explore the microbial world and engage with genome sequencing technologies. Environmental isolates were selected from an urban farm where dairy cows are raised. The isolates selected were from a hoof wash station containing copper sulfate and grown on plates containing the antibiotic tetracycline. The relevance of this project is primarily as an educational tool, but also provides information to explore mechanisms of tetracycline and copper resistance in the environment. The putative operons encoding for the tolerance to both copper and tetracycline will be used to develop assays to probe various locations around the urban farm to asses the impact of the farm on the these phenotypes in an urban setting.
