Project name: Hydrilla verticillata
Description: Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle is an aquatic angiosperm belonging to family Hydrocharitaceae. It has distinction with respect to photosynthesis in higher plants; it switches to a C4 cycle from C3-cycle state at high temperature, and also lacks specialized Kranz type leaf anatomy that is found in terrestrial C4 species. The inducible C4 photosynthesis system in H. verticillata challenges our established notion about photosynthesis. This system provides the prospect to study the essential biochemical factors to operate a C4 photosynthetic system, which might be required to alter a C3 crop plant. Transcriptome study of the transition phase from C3 to C4 states of this organism will facilitate deeper understanding of the mechanism(s) involved.
