Project name: Musa acuminata
Description: Banana fruit is a staple food crop for an estimated 400 million people and is extensively grown in South America, Sub-saharan Africa and Asia. The fruit is climacteric in nature and it ripens rapidly during storage and transport, thus rendering huge losses to the economy. In this study the global changes occurring during the ripening of the fruit pulp was studied. Transcriptome sequence of the unripe fruit pulp and the ripe fruit pulp (4 days after ethylene treatment) was carried out and a large number of genes related to various pathways were studied. Many genes were identified for the first time in the banana fruit and a large number of novel genes were also identified.
