Project name: Zea mays

Description: The members of the Heartbreaker MITE family exhibit over 90% sequence identity, high copy number per genome (3,000 to 4,000), and a preference for genic regions as insertion sites. These properties suggested that these might be useful molecular markers. Two recombinant inbred populations were used: 37 lines from 'CO159' x 'Tx303' and 100 lines from 'B73' x 'Mo17'.
