Project name: Solanum lycopersicum
Description: Solanum pimpinellifolium is a source of genetic diversity in tomato breeding. In that the tomato linkage maps are produced using a Solanum lycopersicum x Solanum pennellii cross the question remains whether the choice of the breeding parent influences the linkage map of the tomato genome. A BC1 population of 61 individuals was created with tomato as the recurrent parent from two F1 hybrids from Solanum lycopersicum x Solanum pimpinellifolium. The plants were genotyped with TG279 to identify plants homozygous for the esculentum alleles at the sp locus (sp/sp plants exhibit determinate growth habit). Twenty-seven individuals were identified and backcrossed to the recurrent parent. Approximately ten seeds from each BC2 were used to produce a mapping population of 263 BC3 individuals. The plants were genotyped with tomato cDNA probes and tomato random genomic DNA probes. In 2005 a map with PCR-based probes was personally communication to SGN.
