Project name: Macaca nemestrina
Description: The pig-tailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina) is now often called the southern pig-tailed macaque to distinguish it from the northern pig-tailed macaque (M. leonina) which was formerly considered a subspecies (M. nemestrina leonina). The geographic boundary between M. nemestrina and M. leonina is not precisely known but southern pig-tailed macaques are generally native to Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and southern peninsular Thailand. There is some evidence of limited hybridization between northern and southern pig-tailed macaques in peninsular Thailand. Pig-tailed macaques are primarily terrestial, diurnal, and frugivorous and they form large multi-male/multi-female groups.
