Project name: Solanum lycopersicum cultivar:Heinz 1706
Description: Sequencing of the tomato genome will be done by an international consortium of researchers as part of the Solanaceae Genomics Project. The plan is to sequence the gene rich regions of all 12 chromosomes on BAC by BAC basis and annotate it. The US has agreed to sequence chromosomes 1 and 10 with the majority of the funding by the NSF and the USDA Plant Genome program. Other participating member countries are Korea (chromosome 2), China (chromosome 3 and 11), UK (chromosome 4), India (chromosome 5), The Netherlands (chromosome 6), France (chromosome 7), Japan (chromosome 8) Spain (chromosome 9) and Italy (chromosome 12).
