Project name: Ceratitis capitata
Description: The complete sequence of the Medfly Ceratitis capitata mitochondrial genome was sequenced at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas in Greece. An analysis of the sequence was published by Spanos et al. in 2000. The C. capitata mitochondrial genome encodes 13 proteins involved in oxidative phosphorylation, 22 transfer RNAs and 2 ribosomal RNAs. The genes are arranged in the same locations and orientations as in the Drosophila yakuba mitochondrial genome. Several sequence polymorphisms were identified that may be useful in distinguishing different Medfly strains.
