Project name: Genome sequencing of Elizabethkingia anophelis
Description: Elizabethkingia anophelis, recently discovered from mosquito gut, is an emerging bacterium associated with neonatal meningitis and nosocomial outbreak. We describe three cases of E. anophelis sepsis with meningitis in two neonates and chorioamnionitis in a neonate’s mother. Draft genome sequencing of the three E. anophelis strains revealed evidence for perinatal vertical transmission to one neonate, and excluded a clonal outbreak. Our observations suggested maternal infection as a source of E. anophelis neonatal meningitis. The draft genome sequences were not only important in guiding infection control measures, but also allowed identification of potential novel antibiotic resistance and virulence genes in E. anophelis.
