Description: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is one of the most prevalent gastrointestinal diseases worldwide. Currently, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are the most effective first-line treatment for GERD patients, but long-term use of PPIs can cause side effects and the overutilization of PPIs can lead to significant shift of the gastrointestinal microbiota from a healthy to a less healthy state, so that small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and the increased risk of intestinal bacterial infections. And reports demonstrated that probiotics had activity against SIBO, C. difficile infection, and Salmonella spp. infection, i.e., which constitute side effects of PPIs therapy. Therefore, it is necessary to study whether probiotics combined with PPI have a positive effect on the treatment of GERD.
