A significant contribution of this study is the provision of open resources and analytical tools that facilitate access to the cellular profiles of hearts in a variety of evolutionary animal species. Here, we used single cell transcriptomics and spatial transcriptomics to map the cellular blueprints of adult hearts from 15 representative species from both protostomes and deuterostomes, covering a diverse evolutionary range. For the first time, it can incorporate single cell transcriptomics and spatial transcriptomics data across 15 species and 13 species respectively, which allows to identify the ventricular vs atrial feature embedded in the cellular mechanism of chamber evolution shared by protostomes and deuterostomes.
