Description: We performed whole-genome sequencing (WGS) for five pneumococcal clinical isolates belonging to serogroup 11. Aiming to disambiguate whether microbial glycoconjugates elicit a protective response from the lectin complement pathway, we demonstrate the human lectin ficolin-2 binds specific pneumococcal capsule structures, triggers complement-dependent opsonophagocytosis, and likely spurs the decreased invasiveness demonstrated by select pneumococcal non-vaccine serotypes.
