Description: The spotted gar is a large, freshwater ray-finned fish native to North America. The gar and teleost lineages diverged prior to the teleost genome duplication. Studies of the spotted gar may facilitate making connections between models of human development and disease established in zebrafish and other teleosts, and the human genome.
