Project name: Candidatus Mycoplasma haemolamae str. Purdue
Description: Blood from an infected alpaca (Vicugna pacos)Candidatus Mycoplasma haemolamae (CMhl) leads to mild to marked anemia in acutely infected alpacas and llamas. In animals that become chronically infected, their growth and fleece production may be stunted. The overall prevalence of infection is 15-20%, but in older animals infection rates as high as 50% have been reported. Thus, the infection of alpaca and llamas with CMhl has a significant impact on the health and well being of these species.
