Description: The African freshwater cichlid fish Haplochromis burtoni (also known as Astatotilapia burtoni) occurs in Lake Tanganyika and surrounding creeks, rivers, and swamps. As its common name indicates, the hatched larvae of Burton's Mouthbrooder are brooded in the female's oral cavity for several weeks. This species, which has a diploid chromosome number of forty, is a popular house pet and also commonly used in studies of speciation, ecology, and adaptive radiation.
