Project name: Drosophila virilis strain:TSC#15010-1051.88
Description: We generated a high quality D. virilis dot chromosome (chr6) sequence by isolating, sequencing, and improving the sequence of D. virilis fosmids. Comparison of this improved dot chromosome with the dot chromosomes from D. melanogaster and another strain of D. virilis allow us to gain insights into the evolution of the dot chromosome in Drosophila. Using the improved D. virilis dot chromosome sequence, we seek to ascertain whether the D. virilis dot chromosome resembles the D. melanogaster dot chromosome in having properties that are indicative of a heterochromatic domain, or alternatively, as the cytological evidence suggested, resembles a euchromatic domain. DNA from a fosmid library (BDGP-DviF01) from the BACPAC Resource Center at Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI).
