Description: Synechococcus sp. WH 8109. Synechococcus sp. WH 8109 was isolated from the Sargasso Sea. This strain is a member of marine cluster A; Clade II (Rocap et al. 2002; Fuller et al. 2003). Clade II Synechococcus types are an important component of the phytoplankton, being commonly detected in environmental clone libraries (Ahlgren and Rocap 2007; Penno et al. 2006) and being the dominant Synechococcus group in many oceanic regimes (Fuller et al. 2006; Fuller et al. 2005; Zwirglmaier et al. 2007).
