Description: Neisseria elongata. Neisseria elongata is commonly isolated from the mucous membranes of humans. This species is made up of three subspecies, elongata, glycolytica, and nitroreducens. Neisseria elongata subsp. nitroreducens is the major subspecies which has been associated with disease, however both elongata and glycolytica have been isolated from infections in immunocompromised individuals.
