Because this organism is an efficient producer of food-grade protein, as well as carotenoids, vitamins, and minerals, it has received attention as a promising food source for humans and animals. The consumption of this species has also been shown to reduce cholesterol and lower blood pressure. It is currently grown commercially as a food additive.
