Project name: Saccharomyces cerevisiae JAY291
Description: The Duke University Medical Center is sequencing the Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain JAY291 genome at 165X genome coverage (12X of 454 reads, 58X of Solexa single end reads, and 95X of Solexa paired-end reads)using whole genome shotgun (WGS) sequencing. Strain JAY291 is a haploid spore from the industrial diploid strain JAY270. JAY270 and related strains are widely used in Brazil for bioethanol production from sugarcane feedstock. This strain combines high productivity in bioethanol fermentation with an extraordinary ability to tolerate stress and to outcompete microbial contaminants, dominating the microbial population in the industrial setting and thus ensuring an efficient and stable fermentation for several months.
