Description: These are mixed infection studies of invasive disease caused simultaneously by serotypeable and non-seotypeable (NT) variants of Streptococcus pneumoniae. Case A variants serotype 1 and NT S. pneumoniae were identified from the same culture, with the NT variant representing the majority of the culture. After several attempts to separate the two variants, only the NT isolate could be obtained for Case A. Case B variants were identified as encapsulated 18C and nonencapsulated NT. For Case B, pure cultures were isolated for both variants.
