Project name: Barbarea vulgaris
Description: Barbarea vulgaris is a biennial or short lived perennial that has a potential as an oil crop for use at northern latitudes and is considered to be an important genetic resource for food and agriculture. It has been used for salads and garnishes as well as a medicinal plant. It comprises of two morphologically, biochemically, and cytologically deviating genotypes, P and G, which differ by glucosinolate profiles, flea beetle resistance, and leaf pubescence. B. vulgaris is a diploid; the G-type has 2n = 16 chromosomes, while the P-type has 2n = 16 or 2n = 18 chromosomes. It is phylogenetically positioned between Arabidopsis and Brassica napus.
