Project name: Beauveria bassiana Bb 9205
Description: The entomopathogenic fungus, Beauveria bassiana, represents a natural means of controlling insect pest. The coffee berry borer (Hypothenemus hampei) is a major pest of coffee responsible for significant crop losses world-wide. However little is known concerning the molecular determinants that contribute to the virulence of the fungus towards the coffee berry borer. In order to better understand the fungal process of insect pathogenicity, including potentially finding gene candidates whose manipulation could ultimately lead to more effective insect biological control agents, we sought to characterize the gene expression profiles trough expressed sequence tag (EST) libraries and genome sequences of fungal cells grown on cuticular extracts of H. hampei, PDA and different stress conditions. Isolation from Colombia.
