Description: Acyrthosiphon pisum, also known as the pea aphid, is an insect responsible for hundreds of millions of dollars of crop damage every year. A. pisum is the primary aphid species used in laboratory and genetic studies. Aphids are intensively studied as a model for understanding bacterial endosymbiosis, phenotypic plasticity, clonal vs. sexual reproduction, and the development of resistance to pesticides. Studying the genome of A. pisum will provide the tools to identify targets for biological control and a resource for comparative genomics.
