Project name: Karenia brevis
Description: Karenia brevis is a single-celled, plant-like marine organism. It is a dinoflagellate, and has two flagella to help propel it through the water. Large population increases, known as blooms, can occur and is known as a 'red tide' for its appearance in the water. It produces brevetoxin, which in large amounts during blooms, can kill fish and other marine organisms.
