Description: The genus Hedyotis belongs to family Rubiaceae which includes several important plants like coffee and Cinchona. Many species under this genera are native to Hawaii. They show large morphological variations. Hedyotis centranthoides is endemic to Hawaii. It produces dry capsular fruits. It is reported to have about 100 chromosomes. Large number of ESTs were generated for this plant with the purpose of studying fruit development in two genetically similar Hedyotis species, H. centranthoides and H. terminalis, which bear fruits of diverse morphology.
