Description: The complete 6 kb mitochondrial genome of Plasmodium falciparum was sequenced from four different cultured isolates and aligned with previously derived P. falciparum sequences. It was shown that there was an extremely low synonymous nucleotide polymorphism in P. falciparum, suggesting a recent emergence from a single ancestral population.
